A brief description of the Joint Recreation Committee (JRC)
Founded in 1948, JRC has provided many programs for the children and families of our community (Greene School District) over the years.

JRC provides a four-week summer program at the Greene high school campus. The summer program includes swimming lessons by certified instructors and lifeguards, Arts & Crafts activities, recreational games and bus transportation to and from the school. This program is under the direction of well qualified individuals and an enthusiastic group of counselors who are all local students, which give these kids a part time job during the summer. The JRC also provides the youth springtime softball & T-ball programs, a soccer program in the fall and a basketball program during the winter months. All of these programs are well attended.

The JRC provides these programs at no cost for approximately 300 plus children and families in our community each year. Donations are accepted but not required from participants.

These programs are funded from the generous donations from the Town of Greene, Village of Greene, Town of Smithville Flats, Raymond Foundation, Labor Day Picnic Committee, Greene Community Services Committee, Greene Area Churches, Greene Lions Club, Rotary Club, and the generous contributions from area businesses and individuals. Softball/T-ball, soccer, and basketball team sponsors also aid in funding these programs. The JRC committee also holds fundraisers each year to assist in the financing of our activities. There is a bottle drive in the fall.  Another fundraiser is a Turkey/Ham Party in November (the Saturday before Thanksgiving in the evening). The increases in New York State’s minimum wage continues to impact the JRC’s payroll expenses.  With the exception of counselors-in-training, summer program leaders are paid positions. This includes lifeguards.

The JRC yearly budget is close to $67K. The summertime program alone costs approximately $46K. The JRC committee consists of representatives from Town of Smithville, Village of Greene, Town of Greene, Labor Day committee, and JRC program directors; a total of 10 people. The committee meets monthly.
